30M+ packages processed monthly through Dutch customs
8 million database rows scanned per second
1.3 billion cache reads per month
Pre-alert system scaled 8× since 2022 (30M to 240M lines/month)
A major logistics provider in the Netherlands manages the full import workflow for packages arriving from China into Europe - including customs processing, warehouse operations, and last-mile delivery. With steady growth in e-commerce flows, the system was already handling 30 million packages per month through Dutch customs. However, the next phase of development involved a 10x increase in volume, pushing the infrastructure and backend systems to scale far beyond their original design. This growth came with new technical challenges: real-time data processing, microservice adoption, GraphQL APIs, and the need for robust business intelligence tooling. The system also needed to remain performant under high concurrency, often dealing with over 2,000 backend queries per second.
We led the modernization and optimization of the backend architecture to meet the client's ambitious scaling goals. This included implementing CQRS patterns, parallel processing pipelines, and event-driven queue systems to handle spikes in load and ensure data consistency across the system. We enhanced the system's ability to scan 8 million database rows per second, insert 1.9K rows per second, and process over 4 million queue messages monthly. The platform was containerized using Docker Swarm, deployed on AWS, and integrated with S3 storage (2.3M+ files) and Redis caching (1.3B+ monthly reads) for high-speed access to frequently used data. Advanced caching strategies and optimized database queries ensured stable performance even at scale. The infrastructure was prepared to handle a 10× increase in volume, with robust monitoring and scaling capabilities to support future growth in the rapidly expanding e-commerce logistics sector.
